Nana Patekar
Vishwanath Patekar
1 January 1951 — 8 October 2026
ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति:
Actor, writer, director, and a friend to India's farmers. His voice was hard to forget, and he gave it to people who were rarely heard.
His Life
Nana Patekar was born Vishwanath Patekar on 1 January 1951 in Murud-Janjira, on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. He studied at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai and found his way to acting through Marathi theatre, which stayed with him all his life.
He made his film debut in Gaman (1978). Parinda (1989) made him a national name, and Krantiveer (1994) made him a legend. He won three National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 2013.
Away from the camera he lived simply. In 2015 he and actor Makarand Anaspure founded the Naam Foundation to help the families of farmers in drought-hit Maharashtra. Many people will remember this as his greatest role.
